Z \u017eeleznico za visoke hitrosti lahko vlaki vozijo s hitrostjo ve\u010d kot 300 km\/h, zato je \u010das potovanja z vlakom do 800 km kraj\u0161i kot z avtomobilom ali letalom. Zato ne pospe\u0161ujejo le gospodarskega razvoja, temve\u010d tudi nadome\u0161\u010dajo lete na kratke razdalje z vlaki za visoke hitrosti, kar posledi\u010dno zmanj\u0161uje emisije ogljika ter odpravlja mote\u010do in hrupno onesna\u017eenost letali\u0161\u010d.<\/p>\n

Le \u0161est od 27 dr\u017eav EU ima lokalne \u017eelezni\u0161ke povezave za visoke hitrosti, med glavnimi mesti EU pa so hitre \u017eeleznice precej redke. Evropa \u0161e vedno zanemarja mo\u017enosti za razvoj infrastrukture za hitre \u017eeleznice na dolge razdalje. Pozitivni gospodarski u\u010dinek izgradnje hitrih \u017eeleznic bi se meril v milijardah evrov, zmanj\u0161anje oglji\u010dnega odtisa EU pa bi zna\u0161alo ve\u010d sto milijonov ton CO2.<\/p>\n

Da bi evropske prestolnice povezali s hitrimi \u017eeleznicami, morajo dr\u017eave sodelovati, zato smo spro\u017eili evropsko dr\u017eavljansko pobudo. V skladu z evropsko zakonodajo se mora Evropska komisija zavezati, da bo podprla na\u0161 cilj povezati evropske prestolnice z \u017eeleznico za visoke hitrosti, \u010de bomo zbrali vsaj 1 000 000 podpisov dr\u017eavljanov EU.
